My background, which includes running a business process design & automation practice for Promendo in Australia and contributing to course design for business analysis, took me on a journey that went from urging a large corporation to plan not just technology architecture, but business architecture also back in 2003. Just a few years later, I ended up teaching the very methods I was then trying to develop! I became an expert at recognizing and relating together different artefacts like processes, people, roles, information, apps and data.

My head still works that way, but with another 20 years of business experience to inform enterprise business design!

The value of business focus

We must remember that when an organization’s focus is primarily on the technology dimension that we lose important insights:

What do we really WANT to do?
Where did our implementation FALL SHORT of expectations?
How far down the gurgler is our infrastructure? If we first got an 80% match in selecting our first app, did we use it as our benchmark and get 80% of 80% when we replaced it, not even realizing the erosion of value?
What’s the business value of an app? The technical value of an app may be low but the business value high if it has unique business rules or calculations in it. An app may assist be the only real option in a class for to regional requirements, configuration operations or processes.

Digital Transformation Was The Easy Part

Business Transformation is what really changes the way a business operates.

As Derek Maddern, CEO of Moorabool Shire in Australia recently said:
“Transformation was always the easy part. You bought shiny tools, hired a Chief Digital Officer, got an office dog… Translation is where businesses grow up. It’s the unglamorous work of making everything actually work together when nobody’s watching and the consultants have gone home… Anyone can buy the latest Al tool. That’s shopping, not strategy.”
