I have just read a good article about using RASCI (enhanced RACI) to supplement BPMN. The RASCI detailed the involvement of different parties as an adjunct to BPMN. I think it was a good insight, but the parties and their interactions need identifying at a higher level than your BPMN diagram!

What was perhaps mainly missing is the BPMN Conversation Model, which is not in wide use yet but it’s very powerful. If you have ever used the Six Sigma BIM (Business Interaction Model) you will latch onto the BPMN Conversation Model nicely! I cover different models and how they contribute to a cohesive, multi-dimensional picture for an organization in my article at https://theprocess.expert/modelling-your-business-for-executives/.

I’m a nutshell, we need to identify the parties, the services, the interactions, the more detailed (BPMN) conversations and then how it’s done using BPMN processes.
This should be supplemented by a Business Object Model (information model) or Entity Relationship Model.

There are two kinds of models that can be expressed in BPMN but they have a dedicated model type now:
1. DMN Decision Model And Notation (see https://www.omg.org/dmn)
2. CMMN Case Management Model and Notation (see  https://www.omg.org/cmmn)

Tools are unfortunately being a bit slow to incorporate these into their meta-model in a way that allows them to be utilized from BPMN, but that day is coming. Meanwhile if you can learn how to use them it will prepare you for the future!

I have some courses that are useful in this area:
1. Tools and Frameworks For Business Transformation
2. Preparing For Automation, which covers some modeling techniques
3. BPMN Basics
4. BPMN Mastery (currently being revised)
5. BPMN Nuts & Bolts (planned) which covers more detailed techniques and how to do integration design in BPMN as a replacement for the UML Sequence Diagram, giving you a coherent abstract to detail to design capability.

I run these courses over the Internet and can do so with as little as four attendees, so if your workplace needs some encouragement, training and mentoring contact me – I’m THE PROCESS EXPERT 🙂
