I have recently been working with Zertain on a really interesting project in Melbourne. A large company wants to look at AI and automation. Zertain have asked me as The Process Expert to interview the General Managers and senior staff to find the ‘hot spots’ and ‘pain points’ across the business.
I have mapped risks and problems into People, Process and Technology and graded their impact. I have also mapped opportunities! This is tremendously useful when management needs to make decisions about business improvement and investment in the organization.
This kind of work always involves socializing the project, explaining business analysis techniques and mentoring client staff. There is a lot of communication, explanation and facilitation that goes on. I run lots of workshops, loaded with a list of questions to probe the business and ferret out details which I build into their business model.
I did something similar for Volunteer Onboarding a couple of years ago for the Tasmania Fire Service when working with Justin Collins at Vision 42, but this time I am covering a corporation of multiple businesses and looking at all operations to General Manager level.
This is an enormously complex project, and I am conscious of its importance to this business. I have twenty years of business process analysis and several years working effectively as a ‘Business Architect’ and I’m pleased I’m up to the task. There are only a small handful of people in Australia who understand how to do this and I am pleased to be one of them.
How do I present all that information to clients? Statistically at a high level, as visual models of Organization, Process, Data and Technology, accompanied by various strategy and problem models. Then there are spreadsheets I prepare that can present some of the findings, for example a long list of problems with severity, likelihood of detection and frequency of occurrence and where the problem intersects with processes, departments/roles and the organization.
The real power of business architecture comes alive when I have a great tool to work with. I have used a number of tools over the years and I know that I need to do my job well. I have been a partner for Enterprise modelling tools and business process automation platforms in the past, but few have given me the pleasure of using ADONIS does. I am pleased that BOC Corporation in Europe invited me to be a business partner earlier this year. I now have access to the full capabilities of the ADONIS platform and clients are able to browse their graphical business models and see underlying data on processes, applications and more.
There is a steady increase in the number of organizations that want to do hyper-automation and AI. To use AI properly in your business, you have to get the data sorted out. That requires standardising your processes and making sure you are collecting the right information – not just like orders and invoices, but the time things are done and the path an instance takes through the process. If the right stuff is collected in the right way, you can then commence an AI
