EA Tool Review - Archipeg

Those who follow me know I keep a bit of an eye on the EA tool landscape from a pure business modelling perspective. Archipeg is my latest candidate.

In Summary

Archipeg is a well established EA tool. How does it stack up against others for my needs? Arcghipeg is a good way to record your enterprise architecture. Here’s a brief report. Do your own homework if you are looking at EA tools or call me for help!

What I like about Archipeg

1. It’s consistent with other TOGAF or Archimate tools that do process decomposition

2. It can link artefacts to many other kinds of artefacts (from strategic to technical).

What I don’t like about Archipeg

1. It doesn’t have BPMN

2. It’s very dialog driven so i can’t use ot for live modelling

3. The UI is a bit clunky, lacking context sensitive menus.

Observations

As an observation, BPMN Conversation Diagrams and BPMN Process Diagrams easily merge with Archimate through organisation and process nodes. It is very possible for EA tools to include BPMN – particularly as there are a few good open source components they can integrate to do so.

My leading horse as a solo consultant is still ADONIS by BOC Group. It allows me to be creative in the way I explore the business landscape encompassing strategic artefacts, pure business artefacts (who, what, where, when, how), application and technical artefacts. ADONIS is not perfect, but it is a very good tool and one I have enjoyed for several years now.
